I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;

And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,

And a gray mist on the sea’s face, and a gray dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide

Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;

And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,

And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,

To the gull’s way and the whale’s way, where the wind’s like a whetted knife;

And all I ask is a marry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,

And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

There Is A Place, Key West

DSCF5637 It had been a beautiful 3 days of romance and sailing, and though we were headed to Key West, leaving Key Lime Sailing Club and Key Largo was hard to do. The morning surprise of rain did make leaving a bit easier, knowing we wouldn’t be sailing in bad weather anyway.

Shelia had been awakened by thunder & lightning at 3 that morning. Jumping out of  bed, she looked outside and the rain was pouring, “What are we going to do?” she screamed, wakening me out of a dead sleep.  “It’s pouring, we can’t get married on the beach in the rain!” Shelia had made reservations with the minister for us to be married at sunset on a beautiful beach in Key West. To calm her down, I explained, “Key West is a 2 hour drive from here, the weather will be fine.”  I rolled over and went back to sleep. She returned to bed but laid there wide awake listening to the downpour, fearing for her “Perfect, Beach Wedding”.

6am the alarm woke me to the smell of coffee. Shelia was up, dressed, packing and every two minutes looking out the window to see if the rain had stop. “Mmmm coffee, how long have you been awake Babe? Pour me a cup please?” I asked.  “How can you be so calm,” she questioned, “its still raining?” I reminded her, “Don’t worry they say if you don’t like the weather now wait 15 minutes as it will change”. “Oh ya? It’s been raining since  3 am,” she sadly uttered as she handed me a cup of coffee.

DSCF5899 By the time we had the car loaded the rain had stopped, the sun was shinning and all was well.  We finally started our 2 hour drive to Key West, the last of the Florida islands of the Keys, with a few clouds and blue skies, “Perfect!

I had used some  Hilton points to reserve a room in Key West. We needed somewhere to freshen up for the  wedding and to spend our first night as “husband & wife”.

We stopped at one of the many islands between Key Largo and Key West for a late breakfast. When we walked out of the restaurant, it was raining again. I reassured Shelia that we still have a long way to go, the weather will change.  It rained on and off all the way to Key West. It was hard for her to enjoy the beauty of the Keys worrying over the rain. One of the coolest parts of the trip and kind of an eerie feeling was crossing the 7 mile bridge to our destination.

We arrived at the hotel around noon and it was beginning to sprinkle, Shelia went to check us in as I was unloading the car.  Unfortunately, check-in time was not until 3pm and Shelia wasn’t happy, “Oh no! That wont do, I’m getting married at 5:30, I need a room now! Please?”  Thankfully we were at the Hilton, the desk clerk was a woman and Shelia being Shelia, we checked in early.

By the time we got into our room, the rain was really coming down. Shelia called the minister, “What are we going to do?”  The minister replied, “I’m no weather girl, but we have a few hours, I think we will be okay, the weather changes every 15 min down here.” I wasn’t worried so I laid down to take a nap.  We had nearly 4 hours before arriving on the beach to get married. I told Shelia, “Get some rest, you have been up since 3am”.  No way was Shelia going to rest, it’s her wedding day and she needs to get ready. Two hours later this beautiful woman walks out of the dressing room. I could not believe how radiant she looked. I stuttered, “W,w,w,WOW! You are beautiful! All the worry at that moment left her and she smiled knowing I liked the beautiful woman I was looking at.

As I begin to get ready, Shelia asked if I was nervous at all? “No, this is what we came here for,” I answered. At 5pm we were in the car heading to our meeting place on the beach, the rain was beginning to let up. By the time we parked the car, the rain had stopped, the clouds had parted and the sun was shining bright against the blue sky. Shelia was happy, but all of a sudden I began to sweat, my stomach was becoming nausea. I felt like I was going to throw up! Shelia asked, “Whats wrong?” When I told her she busted out laughing, “Not nervous, huh? Ha, Ha.” After taking a few deep breaths of fresh ocean air I was fine.

We met the minister and photographer by a lone palm tree on the beach. The minister smiled and said “Great weather for a wedding!” We all laughed.

As I was looking at this beautiful woman on the beach, that I was about to exchange vows with, I couldn’t help but wonder how did I get here?  The Bible says, “He who finds a wife, finds a good thing”. So how did I get so lucky? All the things I have done wrong in my Life, all the sins I carry inside, why was God blessing me with this beautiful radiant woman? As we exchanged our vows, I now know why I had become so nervous. How would I ever, be able give her all she deserves? All I know is, God has given me this chance and I will spend the rest of my life making her happy and trying to be the man she deserves.

There’s This Place, For Love

DSCF5255 - CopyIn 1948 a movie was made in the Florida Keys,  staring Humphrey Bogart and Loren Bacall, called Key Largo. They say the two fell in love while filming in the Keys and songs have been written about their love affair. Once you walk on the beaches of Key Largo, you too will understand.

As I sat in my seat and looked out the plane’s window, I wondered what I would find in this place of romance, a destination I had yet to visit.  We finally landed in Ft. Lauderdale, rented a car and started our 2 hour drive to the first island of the Florida Keys.  Shelia and I reserved a waterfront cottage that I found online, recommended by my sailing club in Oxnard. The place…Key Lime Sailing Club, now this wasn’t a 5 Star resort nor was it a Hilton, but  for Shelia and I, it was much more.

DSCF5742DSCF5775Once we arrived in Key Largo, we were to look for a landmark on the side of the road and turn down a dirt driveway. Just my kind of place, off the beaten path. We were greeted by the manager, Gloria, who made us feel right at home. She provided a tour of the resort, the “toys” and finally to our cottage the “Sailfish”. It was perfect, fully equipped with a kitchenette, private outdoor shower with six power heads (FUN), our own tiki hut, bbq, hammocks and water just steps away. The Sailfish cottage was very secluded and closest to the docks which supplied our toys for the week. What a view! This hideaway resort has it all, sailboats, paddle boats, kayaks, canoes, snorkeling gear, fishing poles and much more for your unlimited use, all included in the cost of your room.

To my surprise, Shelia made arrangements with the owner of Key Lime Sailing Club, Paul who provided a guitar.  Our first night we sat under our tiki hut and I romanced my sweet bride-to-be with songs of romance and the islands. I tried my best to sing Jimmy Buffet’s “Margaritaville” and “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere”, but for some unknown reason, it sounded more like Merle Haggard.

The next morning we were up at the crack of 10:00 am (HA). We couldn’t wait to go sailing! Shelia packed a picnic basket and an ice chest full of cold drinks while I met with our Host. Paul meets with everyone who plans to sail so he can quiz them on their knowledge and sailing experience before letting them out on the water. He is all about safety and wants to make sure you have the best time sailing. If you have never sailed or not too sure of yourself, Paul has great Captains on staff to give you sailing lessons. In just a short time,  you will feel like your an OL’Salt!

I had sent ahead my resume of my sailing experience, so Paul and I had a short meeting, he provided charts and shared the best places to sail. I picked an island off shore about 10 miles and Paul said we would have the whole island to ourselves. This sounded like the perfect place for us! We loaded our 22ft Catalina, dropped the dock lines, hoisted our sails and we were off.

It wasn’t long and I had Shelia sailing like a seasoned sailor! As we sailed through the clear waters of the Keys, headed to our own private island, we both were giggling like kids at Disneyland for the first time!  Just when we thought that it couldn’t get any better, a pod of Dolphins began to swim around us. Shelia grabbed her camera and began snapping away.

After  about 20 min of watching these beautiful creatures, we continued onto our island.

What we found on our island was white sandy beaches and lots, and lots, of romance. As I looked at the beauty around us, I decided that this must have been Gods creation on his good day.

 It was near the end of November, the weather was 88 degrees and the water 75 degrees, perfect! What more could you ask for? It was so different from the cold waters off the coast of California. Shelia and I spent more time in the water than on the beach.

After a day of frolicking and pretending I was Black Beard the Pirate searching for booty, (Arrrggg)…… we  hoisted our sails and set our course for the little pink cottage on the beach. We looked forward to a romantic sunset dinner, a warm fire, and a bottle of wine to end a wonderful day.

DSCF5446We planned our next day of sailing as we sipped wine and watched the fire from the white sandy beach outside our cottage. Maybe we would sail to another island and take a mineral mud bath, or sail to the mangroves (hundreds of miles of overgrown waterways) and explore by kayaks or canoe. As we talked about our adventures of the day and the adventures to come over the next few days, I couldn’t help but think how much I was in love with this woman. She was (is) my best friend and in just a few days on a beach in Key West, she would become my Wife (stay tuned for that story).

DSCF5625Every sailor dreams of the day, he and his first mate can untie the dock lines from their past life and begin their sailing adventure. Just the thought of sailing to places I never been to and meeting new people in far away countries, gets me excited. I have already begin to learn some of the basic Spanish I will need to know when sailing down the coast of Mexico and most the Islands of the Caribbean Seas.  Words like “Curvesa, Tequila, Vino and Paquito Rum”!  That will get me about half way around the world.

I would like to share with you a couple who are now living the dream. This 30 min. video is a diary of their 3000 nautical miles in the So. Pacific Seas. The experts say “Watch, read and learn everything you can about your Dream. Make it your passion!
